Spending Halloween at home this year? Have no fear! (No pun intended.) Halloween can still be fun without a huge party or trick or treating across multiple neighborhoods.
We’ve got the tips and tricks (or treats) you need! (Bonus: If you’re opting out of trick or treating, you can do any of these activities in costume to make it even more Halloween-y.)
Carve Pumpkins
Pumpkin carving is a classic Halloween activity, and it’s something you can very easily do with a small group at home. Get your family together and make it a jack-o-lantern contest where everyone votes for their favorite! Who doesn’t love a little friendly competition?
Decorate your House
If there was ever a perfect time to go all out with the Halloween décor, now is it! Plus, there are so many DIY Halloween décor projects you can do with the whole family, like creating garland, spooky chair covers, and door decorations.
Have a Halloween Movie Marathon
There are so many great Halloween flicks, and only so much time to watch them when you have loads of plans. Take this as an opportunity to stream your favorites! Check out our recommendations:
- Best for kids: "Casper" (1995)
- Best for the whole family: "Hocus Pocus" (1993)
- Best for horror lovers: "The Shining" (1980)
- Best classic: "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" (1966)
- Best for Disney lovers: "The Haunted Mansion" (2003)
- Best scary movie classic: "Halloween" (1978)
- Best comedy: "Ghostbusters" (1984)
- Best kid-friendly scary movie: "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993)
Weather (and technology) permitting, you could even take your movie marathon outdoors and create a cozy, drive-in-inspired “movie theater.” Bust out the pillows and blankets, put up some outdoor twinkle lights, pop some popcorn – and you’ve got yourself the perfect set-up for a Halloween movie marathon.
Bob for Apples
Apple bobbing is an oldie but a goodie!
Pro tip: Keep things sanitary by giving each participant their own bin. You can get dishpans for less than $2 a piece and they are the perfect size for an individual apple-bobbing tub.
Bake Some Halloween Treats
Halloween is the perfect time to indulge in anything pumpkin – but the treats don’t stop there. Pumpkin bars, monster cookies, pumpkin pie, caramel apples… the list goes on. Pick your favorites and make a day out of whipping them together!
